From the St. Petersburg Times:
Democratic state Sen. Dan Gelber is expected tomorrow to become the second major candidate to announce for the U.S. Senate seat to be vacated by Republican Mel Martinez. Gelber has a press conference scheduled for 10 a.m. at his Miami Beach home.
Gelber already has a campaign site set up where you can learn more about his accomplishments. It’s my understanding that Gelber has a lot of support from key movers in the Florida Democratic establishment, but with only 1% support in the latest Democratic primary polling, he sure has a lot to prove over the next year and a half.
But neither would likely win against most potential republican nominees. And now I fear that if Klein jumps in it would give Meek a primary boost since Klein and Gelber share the same base.
He’s being seriuos about it. He might have a chance to pull the upset at this rate. http://miamiherald.typepad.com…
1) is it that since he’s black, he’s assumed to be unelectable?
or
2) he’s a moderate, and many posters don’t like moderates?
i’m intrigued by the level of negativity for a guy who seems to be generating a lot of the right kind of support and on paper seems at least as good as Bill Nelson and looks like a pretty strong candidate.
I suggested Meek as a candidate for this seat months ago and was laughed away so I will defer to the Floridians like Chad on this race. For what it’s worth I’ve never seen Meek stumble or make an incoherent argument on the House floor, but of course this isn’t on the stump.
If Meek does end up being the nominee and gets people like Bill Clinton to continue to raise dollars for him I don’t see any reason why he couldn’t at least make this a close race against nearly anyone, but Charlie Crist of the possible candidates mentioned. Rubio is not someone I know enough about to be honest.
IMO are fantastic candidates. I wish one was running for governor and the other Senate but a competitive primary that stays positive I think will only help as in North Carolina. I prefer Gelber but would be very happy with either of them.
We really need someone from Central FL, where elections are won in this state. I think Kathy Castor should run.
